After the success of the 2009 Portland Urban Architecture Research Lab Symposium, Current Challenges for Patterns, Pattern Languages, and Sustainability, PUARL has risen the bar for their second conference in 2011 with its focus on Generative Process, Patterns, and the Urban Challenge. This journal of the proceedings of the conference presents the latest thinking on and application of generative design and process and pattern-based theory and application in the urban environment. This journal addresses wide-ranging issues from historic preservation and urban regeneration to urban sustainability, livability, and beauty.
